A significant proportion of patients with cancer consult with homeopaths. No former qualitative study has reported on experiences with homeopathy in this patient group. This study aimed to learn about the reasons for, and experiences with, treatment provided by homeopaths among Danish patients with cancer.

A small qualitative semi-structured interview study was carried out to collect preliminary knowledge to learn about reasons for and experiences with treatment provided by homeopaths as an adjunct to usual care among patients with cancer. Thematic analysis was used for the development of themes.

Five patients, diagnosed with cancer, were interviewed. On the basis of qualitative interviews five themes emerged: concerns and hopes, obstacles and support, internal health locus of control, whole person approach, and improved well-being.

The cancer patients in this study sought homeopathy to address their hopes and concerns and to help them face obstacles and find support. They were actively taking responsibility for their own health and valued the whole person approach used by their homeopaths. Participants reported improved well-being both at the physical and mental levels. The results provide a basis for further research to learn more from patients' experiences with this intervention. Such knowledge could potentially be helpful to improve healthcare practitioners' communication with patients, and thereby patients' overall care.

A 19 yrs. old male had come with complaints of diarrhoea since one day. He was passing stool 5 to 6 times a day. He also had complaints of severe abdomen cramps and ineffectual desire to pass stool particularly after eating food. He had no history of fever along with the complaints. He did not eat any outside food. He preferred eating only home food.

He had similar episodes of diarrhoea last year and history of fever 2 to 3 months back.

By nature he was embarrassed to talk about his complaints. He was shy and smiling. He was constantly taking support of the table to rest his arms while talking. He would become irritable during abdomen pain.

He looked thin and had dark complexion. He was feeling cold. His thirst was normal. He had no complaints in urine.

On examination, he had tenderness in the right iliac fossa.

He  was given homoeopathic medicine Chamomilla in infrequent doses as per the indications. He recovered well next day. He had no diarrhoea and no abdomen pain. His mind was also completely relaxed and was not irritable.

Note: Chamomilla is used in this case as per the indications. In all cases Chamomilla cannot be given. Every case has it’s unique presentation for prescription. Same medicine cannot be used for all the patients suffering from same disease condition. Homoeopathic medicines should be always taken under physician’s guidance only. Self-medications are not safe and prone to side effects.

We present three cases of cardiac arrest at different stages of pathology. Acute myocardial infarction and resulting heart failure is emerging as the leading cause of mortality. In the long run, acute episodes and cardiac remodelling can cause considerable damage and result in heart failure. In these cases, individualized homeopathic therapy was instituted along with the conventional medicines and the results were encouraging. The changes in the laboratory diagnostic parameters (single-photon emission computed tomography, electrocardiograph, echocardiography and ejection fraction as the case may be) are demonstrated over time. The key result seen in all three cases was the preservation of general well-being while the haemodynamic states also improved. While the three cases provide evidence of positive outcomes for homeopathic therapy, more extensive studies are required in a hospital setting to establish the real extent to which this therapy may be employed.

A 25 yrs. old male had come with complaints of hairfall, dullness, weakness and poor concentration in work since 9-10 months.  He was diagnosed having thyroid problem and was started on allopathic medicine. However, he did not find any improvement in his complaints. He was encouraged by one of his friend to start homoeopathy treatment and hence approached me.

By nature, he was an anxious and fearful person. He blames himself for his suffering. He recollects his past memory of committing crime after having unprotected sex with his colleague. He felt guilty for his behavior and had intense fear of developing serious illness due to it.

He had undergone the following investigations:
CT scan neck done on June 2017 was suggestive of; few reticulonodular infiltration in medial segment of right middle lobe infective eitiology. Brain CT scan was normal.

On November 2017; T4 was 12.9 (increased) and TSH was less than 0.01 (decreased)

On January 2018; TSH was 13.12 (increased) before starting homoeopathic treatment.

He was initially on allopathic medicine tablet methimazole 5 mg twice daily before food. Later he was put on tablet thyroxin 50 micrograms daily on empty stomach.

He was given homoeopathic medicine Stramonium in infrequent doses as per the indications. His sign of improvement started immediately from the first week after starting treatment. His concentration improved at work. He was happy, energetic and the feeling of guilt was no more present. His hairfall was completely stopped. He himself stopped allopathic medicine as he started feeling much improvement with homoeopathic medicines. His TSH level became normal after four months of starting treatment.

Note: Stramonium is used in this case as per the indications. In all cases Stramonium cannot be given. Every case has it’s unique presentation for prescription. Same medicine cannot be used for all the patients suffering from same disease condition. Homoeopathic medicines should be always taken under physician’s guidance only. Frequent binge eating is often a symptom of an underlying eating disorder, such as bulimia nervosa (BN) or binge eating disorder (BED). The role of homeopathy in the treatment of binge eating remains poorly explored.

The study intended to measure the efficacy of individualized homeopathic treatment for binge eating in adult males.

This case study was a 9-wk pilot using an embedded, mixed-methods design. A 3-wk baseline period was followed by a 6-wk treatment period.

The setting was the Homeopathic Health Clinic at the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Through purposive sampling, the research team recruited 15 Caucasian, male participants, aged 18-45 y, who were exhibiting binge eating.

Individualized homeopathic remedies were prescribed to each participant.

Participants were assessed by means of (1) a self-assessment calendar (SAC), recording the frequency and intensity of binging; (2) the Binge Eating Scale (BES), a psychometric evaluation of severity; and (3) case analysis evaluating changes with time.

Ten participants completed the study. The study found a statistically significant improvement with regard to the BES (P = .003) and the SAC (P = .006), with a large effect size, indicating that a decrease occurred in the severity and frequency of binging behavior during the study period.

This small study showed the potential benefits of individualized homeopathic treatment of binge eating in males, decreasing both the frequency and severity of binging episodes. Follow-up studies are recommended to explore this treatment modality as a complementary therapeutic option in eating disorders characterized by binge eating.

Increasingly, patients are surviving cancer and presenting with new health challenges, and there is greater demand for self-help and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

To explore the benefits of a three-month course of individualised homeopathy (IH) for survivors of cancer.

Small, community-based study.

Hampshire, UK.

Fifteen survivors of any type of cancer were recruited by a walk-in cancer support centre. Conventional treatment had to have taken place within the last three years. Patients scored their total, physical and emotional wellbeing using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy for Cancer (FACIT-G) before and after receiving four IH sessions.

Eleven women had statistically positive results for emotional, physical and total wellbeing based on FACIT-G scores.

Findings support previous research, suggesting CAM or individualised homeopathy could be beneficial for survivors of cancer.

Homeopathy use continues to grow in many European countries, and some studies have examined the characteristics of patients using homeopathy within the general population. The aim of this study was to identify predictors for homeopathy use among internal medicine patients.

A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among all patients being referred to the Department of Internal and Integrative Medicine at Essen, Germany, over a 3-year period. The analysis examined whether patients had used homeopathy for their primary medical complaint before, the perceived benefit, and the perceived harm of homeopathy use. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis.

Of 2,045 respondents, 715 (35.0%) reported having used homeopathy for their primary medical complaint (diagnosis according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems), with 359 (50.2%) reporting perceived benefits and 15 (2.1%) reporting harm. Homeopathy use was positively associated with female gender, high school level education, suffering from fibromyalgia or subthreshold depression, and being fast food abstinent, while patients with osteoarthritis, spinal or other pain, smokers, and patients with a high external-social health locus of control were less likely to use homeopathy.

Personal characteristics and health status may impact on the use and the perceived helpfulness of homeopathy.

IS THERE A ROLE FOR HOMOEOPATHY IN BREAST CANCER SURGERY? A first randomized clinical trial on treatment with Arnica montana to reduce post-operative seroma and bleeding in patients undergoing total mastectomy.

This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of Arnica montana on post-operative blood loss and seroma production in women undergoing unilateral total mastectomy by administering Arnica Montana 1000 Korsakovian dilution (1000 K).

From 2012 to 2014, 53 women were randomly assigned to A. montana or placebo and were followed up for 5 days. The main end point was the reduction in blood and serum volumes collected in drainages. Secondary end points were duration of drainage, a self-evaluation of pain, and the presence of bruising or hematomas.

The per-protocol analysis revealed a lower mean volume of blood and serum collected in drainages with A. montana (-94.40 ml; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 22.48-211.28; P = 0.11). A regression model including treatment, volume collected in the drainage on the day of surgery, and patient weight showed a statistically significant difference in favor of A. montana (-106.28 ml; 95% CI: 9.45-203.11; P = 0.03). Volumes collected on the day of surgery and the following days were significantly lower with A. montana at days 2 (P = 0.033) and 3 (P = 0.0223). Secondary end points have not revealed significant differences.

A. montana 1000 K could reduce post-operative blood and seroma collection in women undergoing unilateral total mastectomy. Larger studies are needed with different dilutions of A. montana to further validate these data.
